Aol Releases FlipBoard Killer - Editions by AOL
The AppTwits streams have been actively picking up discussion on Aol's latest product, Editions by Aol. It feels like a beta product though it was intended to be polished and ready for the prime time. There isn't an editiorial direction that you would expect with most publications and it lacks a well-functioning social curation feature that FlipBoard offers. The news gets more relevant once linked to twitter and facebook but it doesn't seem to be happening in practice (yet).
There are a few noteworthy features that will lhelp get some momentum behind this product like its iCAL integration for daily updates. iCal has millions of users and offering integration could insure that this becomes part of their readers' daily routine.
Users can also specify keywords to help 'train' the Editions algorithm. This seems a bit clunky as one would expect Aol's machine learning algorithms to implicitly figure this information out.
Overall, I would recommend downloading the application as it may fit well in between the more expensive competitior (the daily) and FlipBoard. The price is right and Aol has indicated they're commited to improving the experience. I only hope they don't use Editions as a way to pump more pageviews for some of their more questionable properties.
